Purpose of Job:

The Depot Operations Controller is based within the Depot Control Room and are responsible for train movements within the depot signalling boundary using a signalling control panel. They shall control the depot 25,000 volt traction system and overhead line switching using a traction control panel. Undertake safety critical communications with all relevant stakeholders using dedicated communication equipment.
To provide 'day to day' management and control of all train arrivals, departures and moves within Depot.
To liaise with Network Rail Signalling Centre or Electric Control Rooms on all aspects of depot infrastructure operations affecting Units on and off depot, and the Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) isolations on the depot.
Interface with the Planning Manager and Facility Manager to ensure the Depot Stabling Plan is amended to reflect the requirements of the Exam Plan and Depot Asset Management Plan

Key Responsibilities:

Depot Unit Management Plan: Manage the plan to ensure trains are berthed and minimise unnecessary shunt moves to and from stabling roads.
Work with the Planning Manager and Facility Manager to harmonise the Depot Stabling Plan with the Exam Plan, Train Plan and Depot Asset Management Plans.
Ensure all train moves onto and off depot are in accordance with the Depot Safety Management System procedures and instructions.
Liaise with Network Rail on all entry and exit arrivals at the depot and with CTOC for allocating Units to respective operational diagrams.

General Depot signalling regulations and Shunting moves around the depot: Undertake the duties of a Depot Signaller working within the Depot Control Room using depot signalling equipment to work the signals for the safe movement of Units around the depot.
Control all train movements both within, and those arriving / departing from and to Network Rail controlled infrastructure.
Ensure the safety of personnel from train movements of staff undertaking the responsibilities of a Controller of Site Safety (COSS), Individual Working Alone (IWA), Protection Controller PC) or Safe Work Leader (SWL), Person in Charge of Possessions / Sidings (PICOP or PICOS) when undertaking infrastructure maintenance on the depot.

Preparation, Presentation and Hand-back procedure: Manage the timely presentation and hand-back of Units to and from revenue service by monitoring when the Production function complete all train presentation activities, and communicate with Train Operating Company when Units are available for their Drivers to be allocated to a Unit for revenue service.

Joint Operating Procedures: Follow all instructions and procedures in with respect to 'Back-line' track connection with Network Rail, joint operating procedures for safe operation / switching and permits for overhead line isolations and traction power switching by the Facility Manager.
Monitor rights of entry of Network Rail plant in accordance with the Depot Interface Engineering Access Plan, to ensure no breaches to the safe methods of access to Depot.

Electric control operator: Controls the power supply to the electric traction system, and responsible for all 25kV switching operations, facilitates isolations of its electrical equipment, and undertake certification for competency to undertake those duties.
Undertake specific instructions describing procedures the Depot Operations Controller must follow to carry out their duties, and the actions to be taken in particular circumstances for 25kV high voltage switching.
Responsible for the safe operation of the electric traction system and, in conjunction with others, for:
a) Maintaining the continuity of the electrical supply;
b) The operation of Traction Switching Station equipment;
c) The operation of overhead line switches.

Required Skills and Experience:

*Qualified to HNC level and served an approved apprenticeship or equivalent practical training, or experience on modern train maintenance activities in a function of ISO 9000 procedures
*Minimum of 3 years' experience, preferably on modern traction and rolling stock, and related experience in a "hands on capacity" is desirable.
*Knowledge of Railway Safety Standards Board GE/RT8000/TS1 General signalling regulations, as position requires use of depot signalling system
*Knowledge of permits for work to be issued prior to the commencement before any work is authorised
*Good understanding of electrical schematic drawings and section diagrams for OLE switching
*Computer literate.
*Good understanding of English language (written and verbal)
