General Manager
Location: Swanage, Dorset, England/South West ALL
Salary: Negotiable in line with charitable status and practice
Purpose: To undertake the lead managerial role on the railway and to be responsible to the Board of the Swanage Railway Company for the day to day operation of the railway at all levels.
Hours: Nominally 40 hours per week. There will be a requirement for some shift working and weekend and Bank Holiday working. Working hours will be subject to Safety Critical Health and Safety procedures.
Experience Required
Essential:
• Proven leadership and man / business / personnel management
• Experience of setting targets and appraising staff to targets and to role
• Proven track record in a commercial environment
• Proven track record in motivating staff at all levels
• Understanding of the importance of a safety critical environment
• Knowledge of heritage railway operations
Desirable:
• Five year experience of business, personnel management
• Experience in a heritage railway environment
• Experience of managing volunteer staff
• Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation
• Knowledge of regulation in a railway environment
The General Manager will operate a safe railway through:
• Oversight and responsibility for the management, review and continuous improvement of the Swanage Railway Safety Management System to include compliance with all appropriate legal and railway specific requirements.
• Ensuring that all work carried out by staff and contractors working on the railway is discharged in accordance with the appropriate standards.
• Ensuring sure that all staff are informed, trained, assessed and certified as required by their duties, company policy and standards; to have oversight of departmental training programmes.
• Ensuring that all staff are informed on an ongoing basis as to their Health and Safety responsibilities to themselves and to others.
• The maintenance of a robust safety auditing system with identification and prompt resolution of issues.
The role may require the post-holder to be in a position of responsibility with respect to young persons or to vulnerable adults and may, subject to requirements, require an enhanced Criminal Records check.
The General Manager role is designated as a Safety Critical role. Successful candidates will be expected to undertake and to pass an appropriate medical examination carried out by the Companys appointed Medical Practitioner.
