HSQE (Health, Safety, Quality and Environment) – Operations Manager

Location: Banbury, Oxfordshire

Salary: Up to £57,000 per annum, A generous benefits package including bonus scheme, private healthcare, final salary pension and free/reduced rate rail travel.

An opportunity has arisen at one of Britain’s fastest growing train operating companies. Chiltern Railways are looking for an Operations Manager to join our HSQE department to lead on operational safety. This role requires someone who can combine a solid grounding in railway operations with a dynamic and flexible approach to influencing others to make things happen.

Key Accountabilities

• You will have overall responsibility for the competence framework of all operational personnel including drivers, train managers, dispatch staff and control and own the standards and publications for these.
• Act as the lead verifier of assessor activity and carry out standardisation as well as specifying and undertaking audit activity.
• Be a key interface with other operators, infrastructure managers and the ORR. You will support projects with an operational element, ensuring that safety validation happens and the appropriate controls are in place.
• You will play a central role in the investigation of incidents, ensuring departments contribute appropriately and the required depth is achieved, and where required you will act as the lead investigator.

The successful candidate will have:

• Proven frontline operational experience
• Worked as an assessor of safety critical staff and have experience of producing operational documents and instructions.
• A competence and be able to interpret the rules to Chiltern’s operation.
• A good grasp of railway technology and systems in use on the Chiltern network.
• A safety qualification such as NEBOSH certificate.
• Experience in frontline operational competence preferably train driving.
