Rail Operations Safety Specialist

EWI are seeking a Rail Operations Safety Specialist to join an LRT project in Canada. This role involves working closely with key stakeholders to ensure the safety and readiness of the system before it becomes operational.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Readiness:
- Ensure safety during the testing and commissioning phases by adhering to approved protocols and procedures.
- Assist in the creation and review of plans related to operational readiness, emergency responses, and essential safety documentation.
- Implement safety recommendations based on audits, inspections, and risk assessments to minimise risks.
- Assess risk mitigation strategies and ensure compliance with the Safety Management Plan as operations move toward full implementation.
Safety Assurance:
- Develop and maintain safety programs and policies that meet industry regulations and best practices.
- Regularly conduct audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify potential hazards in rail operations and infrastructure.
- Investigate incidents, analyse root causes, and provide actionable recommendations to prevent future occurrences.
- Monitor and analyse safety performance metrics, presenting improvement suggestions to management.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Stay informed on relevant federal, provincial, and municipal safety regulations impacting rail operations.
- Collaborate with regulatory agencies and external stakeholders to facilitate inspections, audits, and approvals.
- Prepare and submit required safety reports, documentation, and certifications.
Training and Awareness:
- Design and deliver safety training sessions for staff, contractors, and stakeholders.
- Foster a positive safety culture through consistent communication, awareness campaigns, and engagement activities.
- Lead safety briefings, drills, and toolbox talks to reinforce safety procedures and emergency preparedness.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Partner with various departments to integrate safety protocols throughout all project phases.
- Actively participate in safety committees, offering expert advice on safety issues.
- Effectively communicate with stakeholders on potential risks, issues, and mitigation strategies.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience in rail operations safety, with a focus on light rail transit.
- Expertise in risk assessment methodologies and safety management systems aligned with global standards.
- Experience conducting safety audits, investigating incidents, and performing root cause analysis.
- Strong organisational, communication, and interpersonal abilities.
- Able to work independently, handle multiple projects, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and general computer skills.
- Must have a valid Canadian work permit or citizenship.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to the project site as required.
