Railway Operations Manager
National Railway Museum based York and Shildon
Full Time and Permanent
Salary - £35,000 per annum
As Railway Operations Manager for The National Railway Museum, you will oversee all on and off-site rail moves during the arrival of new vehicles, changes in our exhibitions or transferrals to other museums. In-depth experience of operations and logistics on either heritage railways or Network Rail is essential; experience of both would be a distinct advantage.
We are the largest Museum of our kind in the world, with a number of locomotives operating around the country. Our vehicles are used on heritage railways and at special events, hired out for mainline use as charter trains and we also have our own public ride on-site at the Museum. In every case, you will ensure that our locomotives are operated properly and safely, and that they are cared for correctly, particularly during shunting, haulage, lifting and slinging. You will also be responsible for sourcing and managing experienced train crews when required.
Because of the breadth of our exhibitions, you will ideally have experience of both steam and diesel locomotives, including vehicle braking systems. Youll have the detailed knowledge of the railway working environment needed to manage contractors, motivate a team and supervise volunteers. A strong commitment to the highest standards of Health & Safety is vital, with a proven ability to resolve rail operating challenges in an efficient, effective way.
The National Railway Museum is a part of the Science Museum Group and we welcome almost one million visitors every year to our exciting and innovative public programme. Our aim is to connect generations through the wonderful stories of railways and how they shaped the world we live in. We house a unique and internally important collection, including some of the most iconic engines from throughout rail history.
