Senior Consultant - Rail Operations in London, London, United Kingdom
About the role
We are seeking to recruit an individual to lead work in rail operations management. The work will involve diagnosing and demonstrating operational and performance issues through established industry diagnostic tools. The individual will need to link operational skills/experience and analytics, confidently explaining to industry leaders the impact of operational change through data analysis and vice versa. The individual will need to manage operational projects and workstreams on behalf of Government bodies, train operating companies and infrastructure managers. They will need to manage staff to complete key inputs such as overseeing the production of analytical assessments.
Requirements
- Experience working in a frontline operations environment for a train operating company or for Network Rail is desirable. We acknowledge that applicants hold a unique blend of skill and experience. We are looking for applicants with a number of the following attributes:
- Have a strong interest in and understanding of the rail sector and has an appreciation of operational and strategic issues within it
- Have a broad understanding of operational practices in train operating companies or rail infrastructure managers, including the management of:
- Frontline staff - e.g. diagramming, rostering, negotiations and Industrial Relations;
- Operational performance, costs and budgets;
- Contractual aspects of franchised rail services - e.g. Franchise Agreement and Track Access Agreements;
- Business approval processes - e.g. board paper development; and
- Business change and project delivery - e.g. timetable changes, new rolling stock programmes, staff engagement and infrastructure change
- Demonstrate an understanding of the key factors that affect the operating performance of railway systems in the UK and have experience of analysing rail performance
- Be proficient in other Microsoft packages including Word, Excel PowerPoint and Outlook
- Work effectively as part of a team
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills, including:
- Experience in communicating effectively with clients and senior management;
- The ability to back up opinions with well-constructed, evidenced arguments and analysis; and
- The ability to confidently and clearly explain complex analysis to non-specialists.
- Able to write and present information in a well-structured and logical way
- Demonstrate experience in successfully managing small-medium sized projects or workstreams on larger projects
- Have experience in developing effective working relationships with colleagues, clients and potential clients, and assist in the development of the business
Key accountabilities

- Manage and supervise more junior members of the team
- Broaden and develop their own expertise and skill set to align with the needs of our clients
- Contribute to the development of high-quality proposals to support work winning activities
