This is a Full Time Contract. Salary is dependant upon experience, skills and knowledge.

Purpose of the Role

To complete all daily tasks of OTM running, escalating and managing accidents and incidents together with all other Control Room duties in a safety critical environment.

Key Areas of Responsibility & Accountability

  • Working as a Shift Operations Controller who has overall responsibility for the safety, operation and performance of the Colas Fleet on all shifts
  • To ensure clear communication in the correct timescales to facilitate the safe and efficient operation/ performance of the Colas fleet
  • To proactively manage the reporting, recording and escalation of any Incidents/ accidents/ environmental occurrences in a professional and efficient manner informing the appropriate parties in the correct timescales in accordance with Company procedures
  • To proactively manage all aspects of Colas Rail Fleet including staff and commercial issues and work towards successful completion of production work on their shift.
  • To assist in ensuring that all work undertaken is recorded, logged and reported to the correct management personnel in detail and to an appropriate standard
  • To assist in the management of all personnel on their shift in terms of all short-term changes, sickness and exceedances
  • Produce shift reports that include detailed maintenance and production information to the requirements of the Business
  • To assist in the management of Safety, Accidents/ Incidents/ Environmental issues, production output and quality for all Rail Services equipment and operators
  • To liaise with the maintenance department on all issues affecting machine performance on operational shifts
  • The monitoring of all staff booked on for duty and identifying those who have failed to book on and off
  • To diligently log fuel levels and working directions of the OTM fleet
  • To produce a clear and concise written handover of outstanding events to the next shift
  • To assist in the response to any SPAD/ Incidents involving manpower or OTM when on duty or available to attend
  • To receive information and react as an escalation centre for accidents and incidents on Colas Project sites
  • Assist in the management of the standards inside the control room to facilitate efficient and professional operation
  • Ensure all machine / loco and train movements are managed to eradicate any eventuality of subsequent costs for third party train delays
  • To have thorough knowledge of commercial implications and proactively manage commercial issues on shift
  • To be proactive in checking resource for each transit and working shift to ensure no anomalies
  • To understand the reporting and escalating lines between the different divisions and report appropriately.
  • To escalate as appropriate any issue which either through company procedure demands so or that falls outside of the Control Room Managers competency or authority
  • To produce high quality management reports containing relevant information.
  • To attend all required training for the role and continuing training throughout their employment.
  • To assist in the sharing of knowledge and the mentoring of any new starters

  • As you will expect the organisation may change from time to time and you will be expected to meet the operational requirements.

Person Specification

  • The job holder will be expected to work on the OTM Control Desk and be able to work using their own initiative.
  • They must be dynamic, able to work without supervision and be able to use initiative.
  • They must be able to work as a team and be flexible with their time to accommodate late notice shift changes.
  • The person must have a positive attitude and expect to work under pressure in a busy and pressurised environment.
  • The person must have a professional approach to working in a highly skilled and professional role, understanding that this department runs the entire business out of hours.
  • They must be able to make commercial and safety critical decisions based upon what is happening in real time and have the ability to report the basis of these decisions to senior management. The person must have the ability to speak clearly in English and have good spelling and grammatical skills. Communication is key in this role and the individual will be speaking with all stakeholders of all levels.
  • The candidate will be confident and have the ability to give clear instructions.
