Network Rail has been busy revitalising Britains railway for over a decade now - and we have more exciting plans for the future. Indeed, our programme for the next five years includes around 5,000 new projects and ambitious and evolving plans that will address the delivery challenges well face head on. Add in the fact that we continue to see a strong growth in passenger and train numbers and it means that the next few years will see the largest changes to the rail network since Victorian times.
Join us as a Train Running Controller and you could soon be assisting with the delivery of the regions train services in order to achieve the highest public and freight performance measures for its operators. A role thats about minimising overall delay and maximising service to end users, it will see you regularly communicate with signallers and the Integrated Control Centre, Swindon and ensure best practice is shared and consistent techniques used on all shifts. Well also rely on you to identify opportunities to fine tune the working timetable, provide feedback to relevant planning departments and follow up to make sure theyre acted upon. Taking ownership of branch line services, dealing with disruptive events, monitoring the worst performing trains to understand root causes and best ways to manage them all are aspects of this challenging role.
As well as operational experience within a control environment or operations role, youll need a good understanding of operating procedures, rules and regulations. Proficiency using MS Office and Control specific software (CCF, TMIS, TRUST, TRUST DA, TOPS, SHEILA, GENIUS, Crews in Genius, P2v2, Nexus Alpha and Alpha Page or another communications/pager system) is essential too. Youll also need knowledge of Train and Freight Operators organisational structure and routes and, ideally, geographical knowledge of local railway infrastructure and familiarity with Train Service Recovery Plans. An excellent team worker whos adept at making objective decisions, even under pressure, above all, you have the strong communication skills it takes to influence others.
