Hired Plant Supervisor in Scunthorpe, United Kingdom

The Role

An opportunity has arisen for a Hired Plant Supervisor to join VolkerRail Plant, working within the HP&E team. The Hired Plant and Equipment Department (HP&E) specialises in supplying self-operated rail maintenance plant and equipment to the rail industry. HP&E have 16 Platform Basket Evo Rail Mobile Elevated Working Platforms, providing a solution to our clients working at height needs focusing predominantly on working on overhead line equipment. All our machines are serviced to a vigorous maintenance regime by a resource pool of 8 qualified Fitters giving the client the option of fitter cover when the machines are operational.

All the fitters have vans which can double up as mobile workshops with a stock of common spares which help to contribute to our excellent reliability stats. We also have rail specific Small Plant and Equipment providing specialist PWAY and Welding equipment to VolkerRail.

The successful candidate will be required to work on a roster, working 160 hours over a four-week period, which comprises of one non rostered weekend. The candidate will work to the company's strict fatigue policy.

Key Accountabilities

The key duties will include:

  • Effectively organise, supervise, utilise the HP&E maintenance staff, small plant and equipment resources within workshop and site environments.
  • Supervision of the HP&E Mechanics on a daily basis providing guidance and support
  • Ensure that all plant and equipment is fit for purpose and all safety and technical standards are met.
  • Organise and direct the planned preventive maintenance
  • Responsibility for ensuring fitters complete all service documentation in a timely manner and to engineering standards
  • Ensure that the mechanics have machine service packs prior to servicing the machines, consisting of all the relevant consumables associated with the service level
  • Review maintenance spreadsheet on a daily basis
  • Review the HPE faults email alias first thing in the morning then mid-afternoon every day, working with the Assets Manager and the Technical Standards Manager to close faults out asap following the correct process
  • Carry out any technical safety briefings with the HP&E fitters
  • Ensure that workshop and Fitter vehicles are clean, safe and maintained to a high standard, arranging any HP&E Vehicle servicing, repairs etc. in conjunction with the Vehicle supplier, reporting any issues to the Resource Manager and Assets Manager
  • Keeping an up-to-date vehicle spreadsheet documenting breakdowns and issues enabling the HP&E Assets Manager and Resource Manager to see any trends in breakdowns or reliability
  • Review weekly vehicle inspection forms signing off to acknowledge all is ok or actions to close out any defects
  • Assess Plant and paperwork immediately upon return from site, any damages identified and complete relevant Damage Paperwork same day, to be submitted to Asset Manager for approval as per the Hire Plant & Equipment Business process
  • Responsible for undertaking "Final Check" of any and all plant scheduled to be delivered to Client, completing and signing relevant paperwork.
  • Ensure that all environmental requirements and company procedures are adhered to by maintenance staff.
  • Carry out at least two criteria sport checks on every 6 and 12 monthly service on the MEWPs returned back to Scunthorpe
  • Carry out at least three small plant spot checks on the Welding Equipment van when the equipment is returned back to Scunthorpe for a 3 monthly Service
  • Responsible for operating within the practice and procedures of the VolkerRail quality system
  • Manage the maintenance of Frodingham workshop maintenance tools and equipment
  • Manage Portable Appliance certification ensuring all certification is filled electronically
  • Carry out HP&E Senior on call
  • Attend and Contribute to the workshop working group in the absence of the HP&E Assets Manager
  • Attend & contribute to the HP&E Engineering meetings
  • Attend Risk Review Group Meetings, populating new risk assessments when required and reviewing old risk assessments
  • Alert Asset Manager to any non-conformance or deficiency in quality, materials, services or workmanship.
  • Ensure spares and consumable stocks are monitored closely and registered, identifying any requirements to Asset Manager. All data and paperwork to be submitted to Asset Manager.

Skills & Experience

The candidate will also ideally have the following experience/skill set:

  • Be either a trained apprentice in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or possess an NVQ level 3 (mechanical or electrical) or equivalent.
  • Proven engineering experience within an engineering field.
  • Demonstrable experience within construction/railway industry operating similar machines.
  • Experience of managing and developing staff.
  • Ideally have had Apprentice Training with HNC or above in an engineering discipline.
  • Proficient in MS office applications (Microsoft Word & Excel).
  • A responsible attitude and high level of safety awareness.
  • Proficient in MS office applications (Microsoft Word & Excel).
  • Good communication and organisational skills.

Flexibility is also essential for this role as there will be travel and weekend working.
