Qualifications:
-HNC/HND or equivalent but relevant experience may be accepted in lieu
- IRSE Principles Designer Licence
- Corporate Membership of IRSE (desirable)
Experience: A minimum of 6 years relevant experience in the design of signalling layouts, control tables and circuits and CBI interfaces, with demonstrated application of signalling principles. A broad knowledge of rail industry practice and familiarity with railway standards is essential. Commercial awareness.
Primary Duties: To undertake any work of a technical nature that falls within the Jobholder's ability and competence. To work at any position within a design project team to achieve the project objectives. To lead, supervise and check the work of other staff, including mentoring of junior engineers. When required, to undertake the roles of Activity Manager, Designer and Checker.
Preparation and checking of safety critical signaling design, plans, application logic, technical details and TSR's, ensuring compliance with contractual and statutory requirements as well as client needs.
To ensure all design produced complies with scopes of work, client requirements and company procedures and meets all operational, technical and safety principles.
Assist with and contribute to the professional development of staff by supervising and checking the progress of staff, reporting the results and making recommendations to the Signal Design Manager.
Contribute to the production and maintenance of statutory risk assessments and registers.
Level of Competence: Competent to work unsupervised and to supervise others; competent to check and approve the work of others; competent to sign off design certificates on behalf of the company.
Typical Activities: Conceptual and outline design of engineering solutions, presentation of engineering options
Preparation, checking and approval of feasibility studies, outline project specifications and other relevant written documents.
Production, checking and approval of signalling layouts prior to issue to the client. Production, checking and approval of design concepts, drawings, specifications and other technical documents, ensuring adherence to current standards and procedures.
Perform site correlation activities as required and mentor junior staff in this activity.
Undertaking drawing office cover during commissioning works.
Delivery of work to programme, budget and specification
Contribute to the development and mentoring of staff within the Section.
Establishment of and review / update of internal design standards and / or processes to achieve a continuous improvement in quality and efficiency. Contribution to long-term technical development of the office by application of new techniques, procedures and practices.
Assist with the planning, monitoring and reporting of project resources and finances
Contribute to the technical evaluation of tenders, estimating and bid writing including negotiating with clients and identifying clarifications, unique selling points, methodologies and risks.
Client and third party liaison, whilst maintaining appropriate levels of confidentiality
Representing the company on technical matters.
Marketing and business development.
IT Skills: The Jobholder should be conversant with the use of MS Office suite and MS Project. The Jobholder should also be capable of the production of drawings using Microstation.
Site Skills: PTS is a normal requirement of this role.
Location: The position is office based, but may require visits to clients, suppliers, third parties and work sites as required.
