About The Role
The Signalling Design Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (CRE) is required to: undertake both detailed design and checking of signalling design and signalling schemes; ensure designs meet customer requirements, are compliant with technical, safety, environmental and quality standards; and to develop engineering solutions to proposals to best satisfy the business case or Project solution.
The role is part of the Signalling Design team, working on a wide variety of projects both in the UK and overseas involving a diverse range of technologies including Mechanical / Electro-mechanical, RRI, Geographical interlocking, CBI and ETCS.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- As required and agreed act as Signalling CRE on nominated projects
- Undertake the preparation of and checking of design details associated with mechanical, electro-mechanical and electronic signalling systems, as directed
- Verify that detailed engineering designs and scheme development activities result in schemes that are affordable, that meet programme requirements in a safe and environmentally responsible manner to time, cost and quality requirements
- Undertake the development of engineering options giving due consideration to safety, reliability, operational capacity, modelling, maintainability, ease of construction, environmental and whole of life issues.
- Engineering excellence is to be supported by:
- Securing all relevant base data
- Reviewing of compliance with the appropriate standards
- Adherence to the CSM – RA requirements within the nominated Projects
- Review of Design logs and CSM Hazid Register
- Use of risk identification and evaluation methods as required to evaluate and compare options.
- Use feedback from all relevant past projects across the UK rail network, (and any other railway infrastructure including overseas as applicable), lessons learned and customer feedback to improve the quality of designs
- Keeping designers informed of signalling technology changes via training, briefings, and mentoring
- Undertake the preparation of the full engineering data package required for commencement of the detailed design and participate in answering clarifications / queries as needed. Advise on practical solutions where infrastructure deficiencies have been raised. Provide technical support to NRG as required
- Liaise with Designated Project Engineers throughout the project on inter-discipline matters
- Undertake site visits including organising and undertaking correlation as required
- Lead specialist investigations / surveys, analyse results and report to the relevant authorities
- Deal with technical correspondence, liaise with customers, attend meetings, and assist in estimating, planning and workload allocation of the group
- Assist in design activities associated with testing for new or modified systems / installations as required inclusive of Commissioning support as required
Essential
- Effective verbal and written communication skills to successfully interact with a range of professionals and tradespeople at all levels both within the business and outside
- Flexible, team orientated approach to tasks and responsibilities to make a significant contribution to an expanding team
- Comfortable dealing efficiently with large volumes of data and communications
- Working understanding of project delivery and the object of ensuring projects are delivered within budget and value engineered to achieve gains
- Strong personal organisational and business administration skills
- Ability to work productively, efficiently, effectively and maintain drive under tight timescales and pressure whilst maintaining attention to detail and quality of work
- Willingness to learn, improve and adapt
- Have good experience of various contract mechanisms
- Flexible, team orientated approach to tasks and responsibilities to make a significant contribution to an expanding team
- Good computer skills and competency in applications – Bentley MicroStation, Bentley Descartes, MicroSoft 365 (Outlook, Excel & Word)
- Prepared to work outside the normal working hours to meet needs and objectives of the business as required
- Experience of working within the GRIP process within the Network Rail Infrastructure
- The ability to work autonomously to assist in delivering projects within timescale, on budget and to the agreed specification
- 10 Years detailed signalling design experience on varying projects with regards to technology and complexity
Desirable
- IRSE License Holder Signalling Principles Designer c/w Signalling Design Verifier, or working towards
- Expertise working under NR forms of contracts
- Emergency First Aid at Work

Schedule
Monday to Friday, Office based position.
