Swanage Railway is an award winning heritage railway carrying 200,000 passengers a year, making it one of the leading tourist attractions in Dorset.

Working as part of a team, you’ll join people who are passionate about maintaining our heritage Signals and Telecommunications Infrastructure.

The role

As our Signal and Telecommunications Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring that our signalling infrastructure ensures the safe passage of trains on our railway.

You will have the opportunity to put your management and technical skills to use through design, installation and maintenance of our signal and telegraph systems. Leading a team of staff, you will follow required procedures to complete tasks, to a high standard and on time to ensure the smooth running of our timetable. Following good practice and playing your part in promoting a safe operating environment will also be key aspects of the role.

Working within our S&T Department will give you the opportunity to put your technical skills to good use in the technical aspects of operating a heritage railway and your management skills working with your team focussing on improving standards. There is opportunity to make your mark as part of a varied team of volunteers and employees.

The person

  • Demonstrable team management skills, including working with volunteers.
  • Experience of provide signalling solutions, ideally in both a mainline and heritage railway environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of problem solving in a signalling environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of medium term signalling maintenance and renewal programmes.
  • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent with a minimum of 3 subjects, including Maths and English.
  • Ideally but not essentially, a signalling engineering qualification and/or membership of the Institute of Railway Signalling Engineers.
  • Self-reliant but also a team player with a positive attitude to working with both volunteers and employees.
  • A ‘can-do’ attitude along with an honest and pragmatic approach to work.
