Our client is a rail civils and electrical contractor who are looking to recruit a Contractor Engineering Manager who has a contractor background managing designs, subcontractor Designers as well as bringing in the design in house.

The role would suit a well qualified Engineer with CEM and/or CRE sign off from Network Rail, who has worked for rail contractors performing the above and below duties and help build and grow in house design capabilities.

We are looking for someone who can manage sub-contract designers, deal with some internal self-delivery of low complexity survey and design work (mainly consisting of cable containment for electrical projects), deal with some internal CAD resource to oversee the completion of as built drawings. The ideal candidate for us would be able to perform some additional duties like CEM and CRE civils.

The opportunity is to come on board early in the re-building of a design capability. Types of projects covered will be the provision of modular buildings for compounds and depots and associated civil(s), cable route design, some low complexity railway civil(s) design like signalling related civil(s) location case bases, retaining walls, platform extensions, signal bases. We also have a buildings framework to deliver over the coming years which will involve things like pedestrian footbridges, platform canopy up-grades and replacements, some building refurbishments etc.…

Initially we are looking for someone to handle things from an operational perspective and we will support them in terms of designs and subcontract designers.

Key requirements;

• Qualified Civil Engineer
• Experience of rail civils and electrical designs
• Ability to lead engineering management change and manage design functions/capabilities
• Experience of working in a contractor environment managing subcontract design teams
• Must be CRE or CEM signed off by Network Rail
• Have the interest and ability to undertake low complexity designs themselves
• Have the right attitude to build and lead an in-house and external design team.
