Environmental Manager


Job Summary

An opportunity has arisen for an Environmental Manager to join VolkerRail Specialist Businesses working to promote environmental and social best practise across our Power, Signalling, Metro and Rail Projects, and Plant departments. The role will be based at head office in Doncaster, with flexibility to operate out of offices in the North West. The role will involve frequent travel to project sites across the UK.

Reporting to the Head of Environment & Sustainability, the key duties will include:

  • Responsibility for managing and developing a team of Environmental Advisors.
  • Responsibility for embedding environment and social management throughout all stages of a contract; through work winning, design, planning, mobilisation and delivery.
  • Performing the role of VRSB Environmental CRE.
  • Facilitating delivery of the VolkerRail Sustainability Strategy and HSQES Plan across VRSB, including social value reporting.
  • Providing senior technical support to ensure that delivery teams comply with both VolkerRail’s environmental management systems, environmental legislation and client contract requirements.
  • Acting as Lead Investigator for environmental incidents for VRSB activities.

Job Requirements

You will be self-motivated with a pro-active approach to drive environment and social change programmes across all disciplines and levels of management with energy and enthusiasm. A high level of integrity to build strong, collaborative relationships internally and with external stakeholders is a key requirement for this role.

The candidate will have an environment, or similar, degree as a minimum and will also ideally have the following experience/skill set:

  • Have a minimum of 7-years’ experience in an environmental role within the railway/construction industry
  • Hold at least Practitioner membership with an environmental body e.g. IEMA
  • Previous experience of managing and developing effective teams, ideally in an environmental related discipline
  • Practical experience of delivering environmental change programmes at an organisational level
  • Practical experience of effective implementation of ISO14001
  • Experience of liaising with clients and competent authorities is essential
  • Production of environmental procedures and environmental management plans, including the identification of significant aspects and impacts.
  • Ability to identify trends in environmental and social performance and undertake verification through audits and inspections, implementing corrective action plans where required.
