Summary of the Environmental and Sustainability Manager:

I am currently recruiting for an Environmental and Sustainability Manager to work on the HS2 project based in Birmingham in a permanent capacity.

Part of the Senior Management Team for the HS2 Early Works contract this role will be a key point of contact for the client, in relation to environmental and sustainability deliverables, and will be responsible for ensuring consideration of sustainability throughout the design and delivery of works as well the timely delivery of relevant contract commitments.

Responsibilities for the Environmental and Sustainability Manager:

• Form part of the Senior Management Team for the Early Works providing specialist support to the Team as required.
• Liaise with / report to client to ensure all environmental and sustainability deliverables are being met in accordance with contract, legal and other compliance requirements.
• Work with design and delivery teams to ensure the best environmental / sustainability outcomes are achieved for the works.
• Liaise with regulators and other stakeholders as required.
• Work with the consents team to ensure all consents / permits required are in place prior to works commencing.
• Work with Project Teams to ensure all documentation required by the client is in place prior to surveys / works commencing.
• Undertake review and verification of subcontractor documentation.
• Undertake periodic audits and inspections of subcontractors.
• Support the implementation and maintenance of ISO 14001:2015.
• Verification of evidence for CEEQUAL.

Requirements for the Environmental and Sustainability Manager:

• Educated to degree level in a relevant subject you will be a Chartered Environmentalist with Full IEMA Membership (or equivalent).
• Demonstrable experience in environmental management on major infrastructure construction projects including design phase and construction phase experience
• Demonstrable experience in assessing environmental effects, developing mitigation proposals and implementing environmental designs to avoid or reduce environmental effects
• Demonstrable experience in developing and implementing environmental design compliance procedures, and reporting
• Good knowledge and practical experience of developing, implementing and improving EMS's certified to BS EN ISO 14001
• Good knowledge and practical experience of statutory environmental requirements, including requirements relating to all the key areas associated with environmental assessments of schemes.
• Experience of liaison with stakeholders including statutory bodies
• Demonstrable experience in the implementation of the waste hierarchy, Circular Economy principles and beneficial re-use
• Demonstrable experience in sustainable materials, material exchange programmes, energy and carbon management
• Demonstrable experience in managing sustainability assessments, rating and awards schemes for major infrastructure projects
• Able to act as an internal verifier for CEEQQAL if required.
