THALES is delivering the £760million, 4 Lines Modernisation Programme (4LM), an Automatic Train Control (ATC) system for four of London Undergrounds Sub Surface Rail (SSR) lines: District, Circle, Metropolitan and Hammersmith & City. The programme has a five year duration and is a comprehensive solution including management, design, development, manufacturing, supply, delivery, construction, installation, integration, testing, commissioning and migration. THALES UK are working in collaboration with the client and our colleagues in Canada and India to deliver this project.

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Subcontract Manager to provide a considerable contribution to the 4LM project; leading the installation subcontract effort (>£100m) and a small team in this flagship, multi-national programme.

This is an excellent, development opportunity for an ambitious individual and is a key position within the 4LM project team. It is a full time, permanent position based in London.

Duties & Responsibilities:


Managing the Subcontract Management Team to meet the needs of the project, particularly:  
  • Act as the single point of contact for all project specific installation subcontract issues and to work with Project Management, Engineering, Field Operations and any other internal department to assist in the cooperation of efficient delivery activities
  • Drive Continuous Improvement throughout the lifecycle of the installation subcontracts paying particular attention to the total cost of installation, right first time and ensuring maximum installation readiness and efficiency during Engineering Shifts and Closure Events
  • Direct negotiations in the commitment of subcontracts whilst interpreting customer contract terms and conditions to intelligently construct subcontract terms and conditions accordingly, working with the wider project team to ensure appropriate flowdown terms are in line with Thales approval governance and Legal Memos
  • Monitoring of Subcontracts performance and managing any non-performance issues. Monitor subcontractor cost, quality and schedule accomplishments against subcontract requirements (activity/schedule/instructions) using data, metrics and robust QS analytics
  • Proactively Manage Risk, Change, EWNs and CEs resolving issues before they escalate and always protecting and optimising the joint position of Thales and the Client. When necessary manage any formal arbitrations or mediations with the Subcontractor(s)


Skills & Attributes:

  • Extensive experience of Sub Contractor Management of major subcontracts, within Rail, Transportation or a transferable project environment such as Telecoms, Utilities, Infrastructure
  • Previous exposure to high value subcontracts (in excess of £5m), high in complexity and high in risk.  Including working with subcontractors who are also competitors on other projects
  • Relevant procurement, commodity and category management experience
  • Strong Stakeholder management skills with the ability to interface well and influence effectively at all levels including internally and externally with customers, partners and subcontractors
  • NEC and/or JCT contract experience
  • Experience of working in a multi-discipline team environment
  • Subcontract/Quantity Surveying/ CIPS degree or equivalent
  • Proven Complex Negotiation skills
  • Post Contract management skills
  • Understanding of Contract law
  • Financial evaluation skills
