Validation Manager
The role of the Validation Manager is to plan, coordinate V&V activities for projects that aim at integration of the basic ETCS functions with national requirements as well as for projects that cover configuration of the on-board control-command and signalling subsystem and its integration into a vehicle.
The Validation Manager reports to the Approval Manager, and is independent of the Project Manager, the Design Team and the Verification Team. This role is responsible for all project verification and validation items and working with the external partners for approvals and certification. This role will work closely with all other parts of the project and will compile the required submission packs for the external approval bodies. This role will also represent the company at any external approval meetings.
The Validation Manager is responsible for:
- This Validation & Verification (V&V) Plan.
- Planning the V&V activities.
- Manage, review and co – ordinate V&V activities.
Verification Responsibilities
The Verification Responsibility entails:
- Performing the verification activities as defined in this plan and reports to the Validation Manager.
- The preparation and issue of the verification evidence for inclusion in the System Verification and Validation Report at the system level, this also includes integrating all applicable product/sub-system verification and validation reports that have been produced by developers or their subcontractors.
The verification responsibility will be undertaken by various members of the team, depending on the verification task in hand. More specifically,
- Design verification will be conducted by different members of the engineering team with sufficient knowledge and expertise to verify the design against the requirements and who are separate to the staff specifying the requirements and the design.
- The Tester in Charge (TIC) will be responsible for, and controls, all testing and final commissioning. The TIC works closely with the Installation Manager and shall not be involved in the design or design checking functions. It is the responsibility of the TIC to implement the test and final commissioning process in accordance with the site control and installation process MTP. It is also the responsibility of the TIC to ensure that all systems and products to be commissioned have been accepted by the customer, where such an acceptance regime is in operation. The Tester in Charge will ensure that staff involved with the design of the system cannot be used to test the part(s) of the system to which they have had an input to the design, providing independence between design and test.
Validation Responsibilities
The Validator is responsible for:
Performing the validation activities as defined in this plan. Note that the validation evidence and reports which the Validation Engineer produces feed into the safety case.
- Independently witnessing tests and carrying out other validation activities with the support / assistance of competent engineering staff, where this is considered necessary.
- Managing and collating the acceptance evidence, including the test documentation, needed to demonstrate that the requirements for the project have been achieved
- Preparation and issue of the validation evidence for inclusion in the System Verification and Validation Reports at the system level; this also includes integrating all applicable product/subsystem validation evidence and conclusions reached from reviewing the Validation Reports that have been produced by developers or their subcontractors.
- Issuing the System Verification and Validation Report.
