Senior Consultant - Rail Planning in Manchester, Manchester, United Kingdom

We are looking to recruit a Senior Consultant within our rail planning team in our Manchester city centre office. The rail planning team sits within our wider transport planning business and we are looking for an experienced transport planner/modeller with 5 to 10 years experience who is flexible and adaptable enough to support the various teams within the transport planning business as required. Some rail knowledge and experience would be an advantage for this role, but an interest in, and a desire to focus on, the rail planning side of the business is essential.

Typically, this role will involve working with clients both within and outside the rail industry, ranging from involvement in franchise bidding through to supporting third party rail scheme promoters. Our portfolio of work ranges from demand forecasting to rail strategy development, scheme appraisal, market analysis, business impact, and operational assessment. The use of standard rail industry tools such as PDFH (Passenger Demand Forecasting Handbook), MOIRA and/or Railsys is something we are able to offer our clients, alongside more bespoke approaches to deliver solutions where appropriate.

  • have the ability to handle the project management of smaller projects, including cost control and client liaison;

  • have an analytical mind and background;

  • have knowledge and experience in transport modelling and forecasting and experience in appraisal and evaluation of transport proposals;

  • have used, and have good knowledge, of modelling software packages such as SATURN, VISUM, CUBE and EMME and understand the relative merits of different types of modelling approach;

  • have excellent spreadsheet skills;

  • be good at managing your time to ensure you meet deadlines;

  • have strong technical and report writing skills;

  • be able to explain technical concepts to others, including colleagues and clients;

  • be expected to have an interest in working in the rail industry; and

  • knowledge and/or experience of rail planning and/or operational tools, including the application of PDFH principles and WebTAG guidance, will be an advantage.

Preferred Qualifications
