Purpose of role
To work as part of a team, to ensure that the fleet is serviced and maintained in a safe, efficient and cost effective manner, whilst constantly seeking to improve quality.
What are my key responsibilities?
- Provide technical support to the depot teams in the provision of fault-finding expertise and assistance with train repair and train maintenance. (Where assessed)
- Partake in gathering required data downloads on critical performance systems at all TCC's.
- Undertake test runs to assist in fault finding and resolution of faults, in particular the close-out of repeat failures.
- Positioning of fault data into shared drive facility.
- Carry out fault finding and investigate intermittent faults on vehicles either on depot or in service.
- Carry out Testing & Re-Commissioning activities on vehicles and trains in accordance with pre-written test and commissioning procedures.
- Functionally test train borne systems with minimal supervision using a variety of techniques and methods, including the use of computer-based diagnostics systems.
- Review and rectify test specifications and documentation for functional tests.
- Assistance in component change outs, and failure reporting for ESG and reliability growth teams.
- Assist with skills development within depots and traincare points.
- Provide on train fault diagnosis/rectification for units in service and investigate technical problems as instructed by ESG.
- Assist with the validation of documentation issued in support of maintenance and repair activities, special checks, modifications and experiments.
- Assist in the validation of Maintenance Schedule amendments and other technical instructions.
- Assist with the validation of locally produced technical instructions.
- Provide technical support in connection with special checks and experiments.
- Liaise with the ESG and specialist engineers as necessary, gathering technical information needed to enable technical problems with trains, procedures, materials or component problems to be resolved.
- Carry out all duties in accordance with the Traincare Centre quality and safety procedures.
- Provide Technical support to the TOC's at outbases.
- Assist in the testing and repair of equipment identified as faulty and removed from trains.
- Ensures work is performed in a safe and effective manner in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act (1974), Electricity at Work Regulations (1989), Railway Group Standards, and relevant ALSTOM Procedures.
- Driving Company vehicles for Depot operational or Technical related work such as breakdowns or occasional travel to do other work at other sites, this would only be requested of current eligible and authorised Technicians as agreed with relevant site TCM & HRM.

- Topping up of sanding systems of rail vehicles
- Fuelling and system top up
- General depot duties e.g.: Line of Routes
- Chlorinating water points
- DMU service exams (Where assessed)
- Depot cleaning/general housekeeping (This will have no impact on Cleaners headcount)
- Taking of fuel meter readings off rail vehicles
- Alista, SAP and SES input (Any future business IT systems)
- Crane driving and lifting equipment where training has been provided & competent.
- Appointed persons
- Mentoring others as and when required
- Nominated person as required
- Additional training for future similar roles/types of equipment.
- To be Authorised person where required
- Wheel Lathe Operator
- Workshop repairs
- Understand and abide by safety notices, rules & regulations and follow safe working practices, H&SAWA and COSHH
- Work in conjunction with Alstom's lifesaving rules
- Comply with and enforce Alstom's Zero Deviation Policy (AZDP)
Essential Requirements
- An Engineering qualification such as HNC Electrical / Electronic or Level 4 Rail Engineering, minimum level 3 electrical and/or mechanical qualification
- Practical experience and a sound knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and electronic engineering aspects of modern Electric Multiple Units
- Technical experience and expertise in mechanical and electrical engineering
- Good verbal and written communications skills.
- Good numeracy & literacy skills
- IT skills - competent user of a Personal Computer, including office packages, e-mail, and intranet
