Purpose of The Role

To undertake the safe and efficient driving and operation of trains as per rosters. Safety, punctuality, flexibility, collaboration and integrity are the main qualities for this role. You will be provided with a business use Fiesta van and a fuel card.

Key Accountabilities

  • Safety & Ethics- Support the implementation of the Business Conduct Guidelines, Colas Rail Limited Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) strategy, associated actions and resulting initiatives, to deliver continuous improvement in all areas.
  • Excellence- Ensure work is carried out with a continuous view to profitability and efficiency and look after our shareholders by guaranteeing that they see value for money and a profitable business. Quality is key to competitiveness. Take responsibility for delivering on time and on budget a high quality product or service, which Colas Rail can take pride in.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Responsible for the safe, on time, efficient and productive operation of freight trains as per the roster.
  • Carry out train driving duties in accordance with laid down procedures.
  • It is mandatory to book on and book off with control
  • Ensure safety of the line and all employees and public that may be affected by the operation of trains.
  • Leading by example on safety, quality and punctuality.
  • Undertake locomotive preparation and disposal duties, as well as fuel locomotives when required.
  • Record and report locomotive and train defects in accordance with Rulebook and Company Procedures
  • Prepare locomotives for service.
  • Undertake train preparation/train ¿in service¿ freight examination and loads examination duties.
  • Carry out the ¿simplified¿ brake test as directed.
  • Undertake route learning as directed and sign for routes after sufficient time for learning.
  • Work various shift patterns including nights, weekends and bank holidays.
  • Must be prepared to lodge away from home, when required.
  • Ensure the highest level of professionalism when dealing with other individuals within the company, clients and members of the public.
  • As you will expect the organization may change from time to time and you will be expected to meet the operational requirements.
  • Any other reasonable duties as required from time to time

Report Preparations

  • Assisting with accident/incident statements and investigations
  • End of the service report on fuel level and locomotive disposal location

Principle Contacts

  • Frequent contact with rostering and training teams, driver standards managers, delivery Managers, and staff at all levels.

Experience, Knowledge & Qualifications

  • Appropriate traction and route knowledge
  • Freight rules & regulations
  • Basic wagon knowledge
  • Personal Track Safety
  • Must be an experienced railway person with an excellent knowledge of railway operation and maintenance activities.
  • Good communication skills and organisational ability.
  • Basic IT skills for emails.

Technical Skills

  • Holder of a current full UK driving licence
  • Ability to identify competency standards required as a result of legislation, operational standards and safety procedures and maintain same by audit and surveillance
