Train Driver Development Manager in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom
The role
A new opportunity has been created to join the management team in a high performing organisation with a strong order book and proven record for consistent safe delivery. As part of the continued development of the On Track Machine organisation we are looking to recruit a Train Driver Development Manager with primary responsibility for the development and implementation of a professional train driving operation for both conventional and European Train Control System (ETCS) signalling operations.
Key accountabilities
The ideal candidate will have significant experience of OTM or Freight Train Driver training and assessment processes in line with legislation and standards, duties will include but are not limited to:
- Establish processes to determine the technical requirements necessary with relevant external regulations and standards an reflect in company documentation.
- Development of systems and procedures required to support the elements of the train driver apprenticeship that are applicable to VolkerRail's operations.
- Responsible for the development, implementation, and delivery of plans for the acquisition and maintenance of train driver route knowledge and traction knowledge.
- Understand and cater for diverse methods that drivers and other staff may use to acquire and retain route knowledge.
- Establish processes to ensure VolkerRail gains best value from the widest variety of different route knowledge acquisition methods.
- Responsible for the undertaking of Stabling Points Risk Assessments and updated in line with company requirements
- Provide both a management and hands on approach to route learning & traction training.
- Assist with the management and compliance of Booking on and off Arrangements
- Develop processes with the commercial team to enable the provision of data and information for the demonstration of the associated cost savings.
- Change Management (assist the business during the phases of transition in respect of train operations).
- Communicate and engage with all employees when required, ensuring operational procedures are understood, adopting a coaching & mentoring style.
- Assist with the review of relevant internal and external standards including the preparation of VolkerRail Documents where required.
- Assist with the management of OTMR data storage and retention.
- Undertake OTMR download analysis
- Establish and implement processes to ensure that the review of completed assessment documentation is undertaken in line with company procedures.
- Assist with the development of train driving, traction and route learning technical standards, specifications, procedures, work instructions and good practice guides.
- Assist with Train Driver recruitment and development programmes within the OTM Business.
- Undertake On-Call duties in line with the OTM plan as directed.
- Undertake the roles of Rail Incident Officer 'RIO' and lead Incident Liaison Officer as directed.
Skills & experience
To be eligible it would be desirable for you to demonstrate how you meet the following key criteria:
- Previous experience as a driver/manager of OTM, Freight or Passenger Trains.
- Previous experience of OTM or Freight Train Driver training and assessment processes.
- Previous experience of undertaking TNA and RBTNA in line with accepted rail industry practices.
- Previous experience of rail industry 'Train the Trainer' program delivery.
- Holding recognised rail industry training and assessment qualifications (i.e. S9 or equivalent).
- A good working knowledge of legislation ROGS/HSE/Railway Standards' and relevant industry good practice guidance.
- Be able to maintain good relationships with experienced managers and employees.
- Strong leadership and management skills.
- Proficient in MS office applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
- Be able to communicate at all levels within the business as well as externally.
- Willingness to travel as required by the role.
- Willingness to undertake train driving duties as required by the role.
- Willingness to undertake on-call duties as required by the role.
- Full UK driving licence.
