About the Role:
As a Technical Riding Inspector, you'll travel on our trains and around our network to support the maintenance at our outstations to minimise the effect of faults on train running, through an application of technical and operating experience and skill. You'll also be expected to support failed units around our network, by providing high level mechanical/electric expertise. You'll monitor and report on the technical integrity of the Northern fleet across all engineering districts, under operating conditions in order to continuously improve fleet performance in line with customer requirements.
You will report to our TrainCare Centre Production Manager and review and report on the quality standards carried out on the Northern fleet at our TrainCare Centres and other outstations. You'll also assist in the development of production staff technical knowledge through offering technical expertise, fault finding assistance, shadowing, mentoring and coaching as required.
It’s an exciting time to join our engineering team, as we are transforming and developing skillsets, to help us get the right people, on the right units, at the right time. You’ll need to work a range of shifts, from the early hours of the morning and including nights, plus weekends and Bank Holidays, it’s vital that you’re flexible and that you live within 60 minutes’ drive of our Allerton TrainCare Centre.

Key responsibilities:
- This is a varied and challenging role, but here is a taste of what your day-to-day activities could include:
- You’ll attend call outs to failed trains, to help our customers get on the move quicker
- Helping to improve the reliability of our trains, through regular maintenance and servicing
- You’ll produce reports and provide feedback to other colleagues and work as part of the bigger team
- You’ll play a big part in our outstations to complete fault finding and repairs of our rolling stock
- Ensuring compliance with all working instructions, standards and rules and regulations, whilst assisting in the refuelling and service of our trains in various TrainCare Centres.
About You:
We expect you to have good technical knowledge Apprentice trained or an NVQ level 3 –in mechanical/electrical qualification and have previous experience working on train systems, including electrics, hydraulics, air systems, diesel engines and fault finding. What’s really important is an ability to work as part of a team and to be able to think on your feet, in sometimes demanding situations.

- Confidence to build relationships with a wide variety of people and teams
- The ability to prioritise and be adaptable when these priorities can change
- Experience in managing workload and showing initiative where necessary
- Someone who is hardworking and confident in their engineering abilities to work with the wider teams
