HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Current Opportunity: MEP AP Lifting

Location: Based in Birmingham - the Central Region runs from the east of Birmingham into the city centre, comprising Sublot Delta, 1B, 4 and 5S. More than 50% of the structures within IPT Area North are located in the Central Region. This region, which covers a complex urban environment, also includes the 3.5 mile twin bore Bromford Tunnel. It also includes Interchange Station, as well as crossing three major highways (A45, M6 and M42).

Key Accountabilities:

Lifting Operations Management

  • Act as the designated Appointed Person (AP) for lifting operations.
  • Plan and manage complex lifting activities associated with MEP installations.
  • Develop and approve lifting plans, risk assessments, and method statements.
  • Ensure all lifting operations comply with LOLER, BS 7121, and project requirements.
  • Coordinate lifting activities with construction, logistics, and project teams.

Engineering & Technical Planning

  • Assess lifting requirements for plant rooms, substations, risers, roof installations, and specialist equipment.
  • Determine crane selection, lifting accessories, ground bearing pressures, and lifting methodologies.
  • Review engineering information and technical specifications relating to lifting activities.
  • Support constructability reviews and installation sequencing.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all lifting operations are carried out safely and in accordance with legislation and company procedures.
  • Verify that cranes, lifting equipment, and accessories have valid certification and inspections.
  • Undertake site inspections and audits of lifting operations.
  • Investigate lifting incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
  • Promote a positive safety culture across project teams.

Essential Experience:

  • Significant experience managing lifting operations within construction, engineering, or infrastructure projects.
  • Experience supporting major MEP installations and heavy plant movements. Thorough knowledge of LOLER regulations and BS 7121.
  • Strong understanding of lifting equipment, cranes, hoists, and specialist lifting techniques.
  • Ability to produce detailed lifting plans and risk assessments.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
