HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Current Opportunity: Environmental Advisor
Location:
Based in Birmingham - the Central Region runs from the east of Birmingham into the city centre, comprising Sublot Delta, 1B, 4 and 5S. More than 50% of the structures within IPT Area North are located in the Central Region. This region, which covers a complex urban environment, also includes the 3.5 mile twin bore Bromford Tunnel. It also includes Interchange Station, as well as crossing three major highways (A45, M6 and M42).
Role description:
Lead on delivering environmental requirements and compliance:
• Main environmental contact and support function for Routewide Delivery or Routewide & Logistics (RWL) teams
• Support RWL teams in their activities and project environmental objectives
• Fully understands the legal and Client requirements/conditions of contract, as they relate to environmental sustainability issues
• Ensure compliance of works with Construction Code of Practice and other environmental requirements
• Working within and acting as the key RWL environmental contact for the sublot environmental teams to facilitate compliance of routewide works within sublots
• Ensure works have been covered under the relevant sublot consents and are compliant during works by undertaking regular assurance visits and notifying environmental teams of works in relation to Section 61, Schedule 33 pt 5
• Reporting incidents on HS2 Horace system and support on investigating environmental incidents in line with the BBV Environmental and Ecology Incident processes
• Implementation of environmental processes within the RWL teams as required
• Develop and or contribute to environmental documentation, systems and processes for the relevant RWL disciplines
• Review of routewide RAMS and documentation
• Lead on roll out of initiates and training to promote routewide consistency
• Environmental reporting; routewide objectives and targets monitored and performance dashboards produced to feedback to Enabling Functions reporting team and the Routewide Delivery Director on a monthly basis
• Assist with RWL environmental data collation and trend analysis for quarterly regional reviews with an opportunity to present to sublot directors, if required
• RWL tracking and analysis of project incidents and enforcement agencies corrective actions
• Attend audits, assurance and inspections (Enabling Functions/HS2/EA)
• Undertake audits and regular inspections in line with project targets
• Identify training needs and develop/deliver training as required for the RWL teams
• Attend site for mobilisation and demobilisation of worksites and liaise with sublot environmental and ecology leads.
• Promote innovation and assist with compliance of environmental requirements by working collaboratively and identifying opportunities for improvement across the team, specifically on the following (note list is not exhaustive):
- Carbon
- Water usage
- Noise and Vibration
- Air Quality - Ecology
- Heritage
Responsible for feeding back to Enabling Functions Senior Environmental Manager and helping to initiate and then maintain systems to ensure compliance with contract requirements and company standards and targets.
Essential Experience:
• Good interpersonal and communication skills
• Must be able to work independently and confident to challenge senior team members
• Determination to see tasks through to completion, with excellent planning and organisation skills
• Understanding of the benefits of working collaboratively to problem solve and obtain the best outcome. Must demonstrate the ability to work as part of the team to ensure compliance
• Must be flexible and adaptable and willing to undertake multiple duties as required by a dynamic and challenging routewide and delivery team
• Must demonstrate a willingness to complete training and workplace development opportunities
• Good IT skills and confident in the use of Office applications – Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• Full driving licence and ability to work at multiple locations
• Must prioritise health, safety and welfare at all times
• Good understanding of environmental legislation, guidance and standards relevant to the proposed work
• Experience of construction environmental management.
• Degree in an environmental or scientific discipline and/or relevant career experience
