HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Current Opportunity: Environmental Technician – HSES

Location:

Based in Birmingham - the Central Region runs from the east of Birmingham into the city centre, comprising Sublot Delta, 1B, 4 and 5S. More than 50% of the structures within IPT Area North are located in the Central Region. This region, which covers a complex urban environment, also includes the 3.5 mile twin bore Bromford Tunnel. It also includes Interchange Station, as well as crossing three major highways (A45, M6 and M42).

Role description:

Key Accountability:

  • Assist with conducting monitoring programs (e.g. for water quality, dust/air quality, noise/vibration, waste), reporting results to the Environmental Manager and/or Environmental Core Team Technical Leads
  • Undertake monitoring activities required by permits/consents
  • Assist with management of monitoring equipment
  • Take and prepare samples for laboratory analysis
  • Enter environmental data into databases and spreadsheets and carry out data analysis and interpretation
  • Assist with the preparation field reports, annual reports and draft staff reports on environmental issues
  • Maintain records, minutes, registers, and data as required

General Accountabilities:

  • Support the Environment Team in the production, review, update and implementation of the Construction Environmental Management Plan
  • Ensure compliance with on-site procedures
  • Assist with the delivery of pollution control and other environmental initiatives
  • Promote environmental awareness on the project through training, briefings, toolbox talks, poster campaigns and other communication methods
  • Assist with delivery of the environmental training programme
  • Participate in regular Site inspections with the environmental and construction teams to monitor compliance with the environmental licenses/consents for the works and environmental plans and procedures; highlighting and bad and good practice to the relevant teams; and following up on actions
  • Record and report all incidents to all relevant parties and assist with corrective actions where required
  • Participate in meetings at different levels and with different groups where environmental issues are on the agenda

Essential Experience:

• Good interpersonal and communication skills

• Determination to see tasks through to completion, with excellent planning and organisation skills

• Understanding of the benefits of working collaboratively to problem solve and obtain the best outcome

• Good IT skills and confident in the use of Office applications – Word, Excel, PowerPoint

• Full driving licence and ability to work at multiple locations
