HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Current Opportunity: Senior Geo Technical Technician

Location:

Based at Fort Dunlop – this location sits on the eastern edge of Birmingham, adjacent to the M6 motorway, providing excellent transport links into the city and across the region. Fort Dunlop serves as a key hub within IPT Area North, supporting operations that span multiple sublots and regional activities. Its strategic position makes it an important point for coordination and access, with proximity to major infrastructure routes ensuring connectivity to both the Central Region and wider project areas.

This is a field-based role in which you will be required to decommission groundwater monitoring boreholes across the N1 & N2 route as per the BBV Borehole Decommissioning Procedure.

Role description:

Key Accountability:

Lead the BBV Enabling Functions borehole protection and decommissioning program.

- Conduct borehole and monitoring well decommissioning in accordance with local regulatory guidelines, project specifications, procedures and RAMS.

- Manage the Geo-environmental technician to support you in the role.

- Plan and Schedule Decommissioning activities.

- Liaise with site teams to arrange access and site inspections.

- Install appropriate sealing materials (e.g., bentonite, cement grout) to prevent cross-contamination between aquifers.

- Remove well casing, screens, and associated infrastructure where required.

- Record decommissioning depths, materials used, and methods applied.

- Ensure compliance with environmental protection standards and groundwater regulations.

- Perform groundwater level measurements prior to decommissioning.

- Operate hand tools, pumps, and small plant equipment safely and effectively.

- Ensure proper handling and disposal of decommissioning-derived waste.

- Repair damaged active boreholes where required.

- Ensure borehole protection is in place and adequate.

- Maintain accurate field logs and decommissioning records.

- Photograph and document site conditions before and after decommissioning.

- Complete daily field reports and assist with regulatory submission documentation.

General Accountabilities:

Record and report all incidents to all relevant parties and assist with corrective actions where required

- Responsible for updating Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).

- Inspection and reporting of damaged active boreholes.

- Responsible for maintenance of monitoring and safety equipment.

- Promote water environmental awareness on the project through training, briefings, toolbox talks, and other communication methods.

Essential Experience:

• Experience of monitoring during construction and on large-scale infrastructure projects.

• Good interpersonal and communication skills.

• Strong commitment to site safety and safe systems of work.

• Understanding of borehole construction, groundwater systems, and hydrogeology.

• Knowledge of decommissioning techniques such as grouting, backfilling, and sealing methods

• Experience in drilling support, geotechnical investigations, or environmental fieldwork.

• Ability to interpret borehole logs and site plans.

• Ability to perform physically demanding fieldwork in various weather conditions.

• Determination to see tasks through to completion, with excellent planning and organisation skills.

• Understanding of the benefits of working collaboratively to problem solve and obtain the best outcome.

• Good IT skills and confident in the use of Office applications – Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

• First Aid, CSCS, SSSTS, SMSTS or equivalent safety certifications.

• Full driving licence and ability to work at multiple locations.
