HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Current Opportunity: Senior Shift Engineer

Location: Based in Birmingham - the Central Region runs from the east of Birmingham into the city centre, comprising Sublot Delta, 1B, 4 and 5S. More than 50% of the structures within IPT Area North are located in the Central Region. This region, which covers a complex urban environment, also includes the 3.5 mile twin bore Bromford Tunnel. It also includes Interchange Station, as well as crossing three major highways (A45, M6 and M42).

Role Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, review and approve Method Statements, Risk Assessments, Inspection and Test Plans, ensuring compliance with project and company standards.
  • Take overall responsibility for supervising Spray Concrete Lining (SCL), Reinforced Concrete (RC) works and Cross Passage construction, including excavation activities.
  • Manage, mentor and coordinate Shift Engineers, SCL Engineers and Site Engineers across shifts, ensuring clear handover, consistent standards and effective delivery of the works.
  • Supervise site activities to ensure works are carried out safely, efficiently and in accordance with approved documentation.
  • Manage and review the monitoring of shotcrete lining thickness, including post‑shift as‑built inspections and regular site walkouts throughout the shift.
  • Maintain high standards of health, safety and environmental performance, in line with company policies, and proactively report and challenge unsafe practices or inadequate site standards.

Essential Experience:

  • Degree‑qualified in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering (or equivalent practical experience), with or working towards a professional qualification such as MICE or FGS.
  • Holds a valid CSCS card.
  • Significant prior experience in tunnelling or underground works, with proven involvement in Cross Passages and Spray Concrete Lining (SCL) essential.
  • Demonstrable experience in a senior or supervisory role, including managing engineers or site teams on shift‑based tunnel operations.
  • Strong leadership, communication and decision‑making skills, with the ability to manage multiple work fronts within a live tunnelling environment.
