HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

Current Opportunity: Site Engineer - Fixed Term until December 2026

Location: Based in Birmingham - the Central Region runs from the east of Birmingham into the city centre, comprising Sublot Delta, 1B, 4 and 5S. More than 50% of the structures within IPT Area North are located in the Central Region. This region, which covers a complex urban environment, also includes the 3.5 mile twin bore Bromford Tunnel. It also includes Interchange Station, as well as crossing three major highways (A45, M6 and M42).

Role Responsibilities:

  • Site readiness and compliance: Ensure all permits are in place, setting out and surveying are completed, and design drawings are marked up to reflect completed works.
  • Quality and safety management: Complete Inspection and Test Plans and Quality Check Sheets, approve method statements and risk assessments, and ensure procedures are followed on site.
  • Documentation and procedures: Develop, approve, and regularly review work-specific procedures, using effective document control to manage and distribute information.
  • Team and subcontractor coordination: Manage subcontractors and liaise with other sections to resolve clashes and maintain a smooth workflow.
  • Stakeholder communication: Regularly liaise with the client to ensure alignment and progress throughout the works.

Essential Experience:

  • Qualifications and certifications: Degree‑qualified in Civil Engineering (or equivalent), holding a valid CSCS Card and full driving licence.
  • Relevant project experience: Proven site engineering experience on large‑scale civil infrastructure projects, with prior tunnelling or underground works experience essential, including possession works (e.g. Network Rail).
  • Technical civil works knowledge: Experience in RC structural works preferred, with strong capability also considered in drainage, highways and earthworks.
  • Engineering and setting‑out skills: Competent in setting‑out using level, EDM and GPS; able to read and interpret drawings, schedules, specifications and contract documents.
  • Planning and documentation: Able to accurately take off and schedule material quantities and produce clear, detailed documentation for handover of completed works.
