Senior/lead Ecologist
Roles and responsibilities
<ul>
<li>Lead and deliver ecological assessments for rail infrastructure projects.</li>
<li>Manage and coordinate ecological surveys, including protected species and habitat assessments</li>
<li>Provide expert ecological advice to project managers, engineers, and clients to ensure legal and environmental compliance</li>
<li>Prepare and review technical reports, including PEAs, EcIAs, HRA screenings, and method statements</li>
<li>Support the development and implementation of mitigation, compensation, and enhancement measures.</li>
<li>Liaise with regulatory bodies, stakeholders, and statutory authorities (e.g Natural England, local planning authorities).</li>
<li>Oversee Junior Ecologists, providing mentoring, technical guidance, and quality assurance.</li>
<li>Contribute to project programming, risk management, and cost control.</li>
<li>Ensure compliance with relevant environmental legislation, rail standards and best practice guidance.</li>
</ul>
Essential Skills
<ul>
<li>Degree (or equivalent) in Ecology, Environmental Science, or related discipline. </li>
<li>Significant experience working as an ecologist, including a senior or lead role on infrastructure projects.</li>
<li>Strong knowledge of UK environmental and wildlife legislation</li>
<li>Proven experience delivering Ecological Impact Assessments and related reports.</li>
<li>Proven experience working with Network Rail</li>
<li>Experience with protected species surveys and mitigation (e.g Bats, Great crested newts, badgers)</li>
<li>Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment</li>
<li>Excellent written and verbal communication skills</li>
</ul>
Desired Skills
<ul>
<li>Experience working with specifically within the rail or wider transport infrastructure sector</li>
<li>Membership of a professional body (e.g CIEEM), or working towards a Chartered Ecologist status</li>
<li>Protected species survey licences (Bats,Otters,Newts,Badgers…)</li>
<li>Experience supervising or mentoring junior staff</li>

Senior/ Lead Ecologist

<h3>Track Access Planner</h3>The Track Access Planner will lead the development and integration of a safe, efficient and robust Route Engineering Access Plan, supporting the delivery of Route Maintenance Plans. The role requires proven Ellipse experience and a valid SSOWP Planner competency.The post holder will take a lead role in resolving access conflicts through proactive industry engagement and consultation, ensuring all access, isolations and protected path requests are safely and effectively integrated into the Route Access Plan in accordance with all relevant standards.Key responsibilities include coordinating Maintenance teams to resolve access challenges, delivering a safe, optimised and performance-focused engineering access plan, and safeguarding overall Route safety and operational performance.The Track Access Planner will lead and control the late change process, ensuring all changes are delivered safely, compliantly and within agreed authority, escalating where required. They will make prioritisation decisions to optimise access opportunities and deliver financial efficiencies, including consideration of Schedule 4 and 8 impacts, making informed recommendations on delivery options.The role requires the development and maintenance of strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, acting as a role model through coaching and mentoring to enhance team capability and performance.The post holder will ensure compliance through effective use of competency assessment systems, maintaining a competent planning team while promoting a proactive continuous improvement culture, sharing knowledge and best practice across the industry.We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity in our company.
