Missions & main activities

We are currently expanding in the UK and Ireland, growing our business and our team. One of the exciting projects the Project Director will work on relates to the execution of the Birmingham tramway network extension contract. The aim of this once-renewable five-year contract is to construct 4 km of new line in the coming three years (three extensions) and an additional 15 km in the following five years (two additional lines).

The role of Egis Rail is included in a partnership agreement called "The Midland Metro Alliance" which brings together the Prime Contractor, the Construction Consortium and the Engineering Office.

The main missions of the Project Director are to:

  • Act as the empowered representative of Egis Rail UK in any governance organisation or commitee related to the project you are responsible for .
  • Develop an appropriate project organisation structure.
  • Manage the project from initial stage to completion.
  • Manage the closure of the project.
  • Manage the project team (from a project perspective and also individual technical development, in relation to training and career management).
  • Ensure effective technical coordination across projects (coordinate the resources & availabilities, and skills & expertise effectively).
  • Ensure capitalization of the acquired know-how is shared across projects.

This role requires the successful candidate to possess the following key competencies:

  • Successful experience in management of multidiscipline and multinationality teams.
  • A strong communicator.
  • A strong technical background related to urban transit and/or railway systems and infrastructure.
  • Experience of project & risks management.
  • A practical, working knowledge of ISO standards as ISO 9001, ISO 45001, and ISO 14001.

The Project Director will work closely with Egis Rail UK and other Egis subsidiaries, and may include working on projects internationally. The role will also require supporting the organisation to build and grow.

Key role responsibilities

This is a permanent role supporting various Egis projects; however, the initial project will be to support the Midlands Metro Alliance (MMA), which Egis are a part of, with the design of the Midlands Metro extension.

The key responsibilities, in addition to undertaking such other duties as the organisation may reasonably require of the role, are as follows:

Project Management and Technical

  • Ensure the successful implementation of the contract while optimising Egis Rail UK interests (margin improvement, risks mitigation, technical optimisation, etc.)
  • Leading the control and the supervision of the production within quality criteria (technical specifications, standards, selection of suppliers) from initial stage to testing and commisioning.
  • Leading the control and the supervision of the project’s budget, programme and risks (cost control, planning control and risks/opportunities control).
  • Recommend and implement changes to the project if it appears it is not proceeding on budget and schedule or should the initial plan fail or incur problems/difficulties.
  • Keep the client and partners’s trust when facing issues and while developing an alternate course of action.
  • Manage an effective communication link with back office departments or others subsidiaries (technical coordination).
  • Leading the selection and then the control of the subcontractors services quality.
  • Ensure the implementation of arrangements necessary to generate invoices and produce 'passed for payment' when required as per specific delegation of authority by the CEO.
  • Promote Egis Group Performance Management System - ensure and monitor the implementation of all procedures applicable to the project.
  • Ensure proper reporting to line management and Egis's decision-making committees - ensure project reporting is done as per Egis Group’s processes.
  • Ensure that Health and Safety Regulations are taken into account in accordance with UK legislation, the requirements of the Group Performance Management System as well as contractual specifications.
  • Ensure project experience feedback is duly made.
  • Ensure project archiving upon completion.

Team Management

  • Ensure correct resources are in place and successfully manage the team, from direct employees to sub-contractors and consultants, to ensure the correct skill set is in place to complete the project successfully.
  • Coordinate the resource effectively, supporting the full recruitment cycle and employee life cycle where necessary (probation reviews, PDRs, etc.).
  • Ensure effective communication to all team members and stakeholders. Manage communication effectively both internally and externally.
  • Communicate expectations and goals to team and manage these efforts consistently.
  • Promote Egis Rail UK's HR processes, and ensure and monitor the implementation of all procedures applicable to the project.

Client Facing

  • Successfully manage the client relationship by; anticipating client needs and managing them effectively to ensure successfully project completion.
  • Work with wider project partners to produce reports, presentations etc. as required by client.
  • Be and act as an Egis representative when attending meetings within the project and client facing Egis Rail UK development.
  • Work with the wider Egis Rail UK team to complete bids and tenders.
  • Support on technical and management aspects of Egis Rail UK growth in the UK Market.

Qualifications and experience

  • Educated to Degree or Masters level.
  • Extensive Project Management experience in the rail industry.
  • Experience of working within the rail industry, e.g. Metro, tramway, heavy lines.
  • Experience of delivering technical projects on time and within budget.
  • Excellent technical project knowledge.
  • Highly organised, a critical thinker who is results focused.
  • Strong communication and listening skills.
  • Strong and demonstrable management skills and leadership.
  • Experience of managing budgets throughout the full project life cycle.
  • Experience of dealing with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience of managing a multidisciplinary and mulitnational team.
  • Experience of supporting an organisation to build and grow successfully.
