Overview of Role

Transport for London (TfL) Engineers are always looking forward. Join us in one of our Operating Assets teams where, as well as maintaining legacy assets, you’ll deliver new systems and solutions. There’s more to it than Tubes, roads, buildings, and bridges; this is about connecting communities and creating opportunities – to move London forward safely, inclusively, and sustainably.

TfL currently uses a wide range of electronic, electrical, and mechanical systems to provide efficient, high-capacity control of traffic, both rail and road. Some of these systems and assets are becoming fatigued and life expired, requiring innovative and novel ideas to allow their continued, reliable use.

Day-to-day, you will be developing safe, cost-effective electronic equipment engineering solutions across the organisation and providing technical support to operations and projects that require specialist electronics expertise. Utilising expertise in analogue electronic design and repair, your focus will be supporting legacy rolling stock and signalling systems used on London Underground, as well as designing bespoke test equipment for these assets.

You will:

  • Have strong technical knowledge and understanding of modern and legacy system design with emphasis on analogue electronics.
  • Have a good understanding of electronic components, their use, and failure modes.
  • Have good understanding of electronics design in safety critical applications.
  • Have proven experience of design and maintenance of complex electronics and electrical systems.
  • Understand circuit design and be able to diagnose faults on complex electronic systems, occasionally in the absence of design documentation.
  • Be able to design and build bespoke test equipment to test legacy electronic systems and assets.
  • Have a proven record of delivering projects through the complete life cycle, from concept to operational service, including knowledge of governing Standards and industry best practice.
  • Have basic knowledge of rolling stock and signalling system safety concepts, and the practical methods required to maintain system safety.
  • Be willing to share your electronics knowledge and guide other engineers on system design, build and implementation.

The nature of the role involves reactive repair, reverse engineering, failure investigation, as well as design and approval of new systems. The majority of the hands-on work is conducted at our engineering lab facilities; however, there is also opportunity to work on site, including occasional night shifts. In Equipment Engineering Services, we are passionate about a good work life balance, and support flexible working. This also means that where work can be done at home, this is feasible.

It’s important you bring a passion for the TfL Vision and strategy too. That’s because, wherever you join us, you’ll explore work of unparalleled scale, scope, and variety across a unique range of projects, as you build your career and expertise. So come and bring on tomorrow, as an Equipment Engineering Services Engineer at TfL.

Equality, diversity, and inclusion

We are committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion. We want to represent the city we serve, which will help us become a more innovative and efficient organisation. Our goal is to make our recruitment as inclusive as possible. We are a disability confident employer who guarantee an interview to any disabled candidate who meets all of the essential criteria. We also use anonymising software that removes identifying information from CVs and cover letters to make the process fair.

We welcome everyone to apply who feels that they are suitable for the role. Due to the under representation of women in the Equipment Engineering Services team, we would like to particularly encourage female applicants to apply.

Application Process

Please apply using your most recent CV and mandatory 1 page Cover Letter (Word format only) explaining how you meet the criteria listed under the section ‘Role Requirements’, with reference to the skills, knowledge and experience you have gained at expert level.

You are encouraged to apply for the position that is most relevant to your existing skills, knowledge and experience as shortlisting is carried out on the basis of how well you meet the criteria for the role.

The closing date for applications is Sunday 09 August @ 23:59

Vetting Process

At Transport for London, safety, trust and fairness sit at the heart of how we recruit. Our Vetting Charter (https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/careers/our-vetting-process) explains the checks we carry out before you join us, helping ensure we create a safe, inclusive and reliable network for everyone who depends on our services. We simply ask that the information you provide is honest and accurate so we can progress your application smoothly. If something doesn’t match or can’t be verified, we may not be able to move forward with your application, but we’ll always treat you with transparency, respect, and clear communication throughout.

Benefits

In return for your commitment and expertise, you will enjoy excellent benefits and scope to grow. Rewards vary according to the level of role but mostly include the below:

  • Final salary pension scheme
  • Free travel for you on the TfL network
  • Reimbursement of 75% of the cost of a standard class Ticket for National Rail travel from home
