Overview of Urban Design Learning:
Urban Design Learning (UDL) is a network and training organisation hosted by Transport for
London. It was founded in 2004 by two London borough officers and two councillors to
support London public sector-built environment professionals understand the relatively new
idea of ‘urban design’ at that time. Since then, UDL’s mission has been to provide training and support to local authority officers NO PARAGRAPH NEEDED HERE BUT I CANNOT REMOVE and councilors. We work across professional silos and bring together planners, highway
engineers, councillors, housing officers, regeneration specialists, transport planners,
landscape architects and heritage experts to help them deliver and maintain high quality
places. We facilitate training, networking and better understanding within and between England’s
built environment community, for example helping planners understand the work of
architects and helping transport consultants understand the work of TfL and borough
highway officers.
We have become one of the nation’s leading providers of training for built environment
professionals and are a very cost-effective provider of continuing professional development
to our subscribing members.
We deliver over 100 events per year. These include highly practical skills-based training
sessions relevant to our members’ jobs, thought provoking and awareness raising debates
and discussions, site visits and case studies to learn from, as well as opportunities for
informal networking between member organisations.
Overview of the role:
We are looking for an inspired, enthusiastic, and hard-working person to join the UDL
team for up to a year. You will attend and help deliver our events and will have the opportunity to
learn about planning, housing, streets and public space design thinking and best practice in
England. You will work closely with UDL’s Business Manager and Events Officer.
We expect applicants to have a strong interest in the built environment. They must have, or
be working towards, a degree or professional qualification in planning, highway
engineering, architecture, urban design or other built environment field. They will need a
good level of understanding of the sector and specialist terms used within the industry to
draft notes and event takeaways.
We are also looking for someone with good organisational, communications and IT skills, with a sharp attention to detail.
Applicants will benefit if they are familiar with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Miro, Vimeo, InDesign, websites and databases.
You will also have the opportunity to meet many built environment practitioners and will need
to be good at communicating with people, with the ability to prepare summaries of debates,
writing clearly and intelligently.
Key Accountabilities:
• Take an active part in team meetings, discussions and input to the development and
delivery of UDL events, publications and other projects
• Manage event bookings including communicating with delegates when they have
inquiries or special requirements, confirming bookings and sending reminder and
post event emails
• Ensuring event presentations are saved, available and working well for speakers and
sent to delegates after events
• Manage and maintain UDL’s website including recording attendance, dealing with
unsubscribe and subscribe requests, updating event information and creating reports
(e.g. numbers of bookings per organisation)
• Take responsibility for event administration including creating agendas, hosting on
Zoom (or ensuring rooms are properly set up and IT systems functioning when
hosting events in person), registering delegates for attendance records, taking notes
during the events
• Support event managers with drafting event takeaways, summarising the main points
made by speakers or delegates. Once signed off by the event manager and upload
takeaways to the website
• With the help of others in the team, there is an opportunity to devise and carry out a personal research project that links
to UDL’s purpose with an aim to develop a particular area of expertise that adds
value to the team
Who you’ll be working with:
You’ll be working with a range of teams and people, including:
• UDL Team - Attend regular team meetings, receive and give information about
events and projects, problem solve logistics and/or Comms issues
• UDL Members & Delegates - Respond to booking requests and event queries,
confirm event details and follow up after events with course materials
• TfL Facilities & Catering Teams (when hosting events in person) - Provide
information about room layout and catering requirements as and when needed for
events
Skills, Knowledge & Experience:
Knowledge:
• We expect the post holder to have, or be working towards, a degree and professional
qualification in planning, highway engineering, architecture, urban design or other built
environment field.
• Good level of understanding of the sector and specialist terms used within the field to
draft notes from design reviews and event takeaways
Skills:
We expect the post holder to:
• Be familiar with online tools such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Vimeo and Miro
• Have an understanding of websites and databases and how to edit/update them
• Have planning and organisational skills and a sharp attention to detail
• Have excellent communication and note taking skills
Experience:
The role would suit someone commencing their career as a built environment professional.
• Urban design disciplines including public realm or street design, building design or
planning policy or development management (desirable)
• Public sector-built environment practices

• The development and delivery of training and networking events including CPD sessions
(desirable)
