Permanent Way Manager

Salary: The railway has a budget of £40,000 + on costs and is willing to flex hours to fit this budget according to experience. Permanent - Up to Full Time 40 hours/week with 30 mins paid break each day

Location: Medstead and Four Marks Station - on site working required.

Holidays: 31 days including bank holiday allowance (or pro rata)

Hours: 5 days over 7. Working days and hours will be flexible according to need.

In order to effectively supervise and train volunteers, there will be a need to work at least one Saturday a month.

The Watercress Line is Hampshire’s heritage railway that preserves the experience and skills of railway engineering and operations and explains how railways changed society through the story of our Line. It operates between Alton and Alresford in Hampshire and was opened as a heritage line in 1977.

The Watercress Line is a partnership between the Mid-Hants Railway Ltd that manages and operates the railway along 10 miles of track and four stations bordering the South Downs National Park; and the Watercress Line Heritage Railway Trust that supports the Railway through fundraising and advocacy.

The Watercress Line is a major regional employer of more than 45 staff; benefits from the volunteering services of more than 500 people to run the railway and keep it working; and is one of the top five heritage railways in the country and one of largest visitor attractions in

Hampshire with nearly 100,000 visitors per year.

We are now looking to recruit an experienced Permanent Way Manager. In this role, you will be responsible for the management of the Permanent Way up to the edge of the Boundary covering routine inspection and maintenance; work and work bank planning; and contributing to the planning and delivery of major project and renewals.

This is a new role operating under recently revised Standards according to the Railway’s SMS. This is an ideal time for an exceptional candidate to bring together people, plans and resources to take forward the maintenance and planning of the historic track at the Mid Hants Railway as it reaches its 50th anniversary.

This Permanent Way Manager role is governed by the Mid-Hants Railway Ltd Safety Management System Standards for Permanent Way and all other relevant Standards.

The role covers the

  • The Permanent Way to the edge of the boundary to include trackwork, drainage, fencing and vegetation management
  • Civils maintenance up to agreed levels and contributing to the identification of issues and movement including earthworks monitoring and reporting, managing minor bridge issues and bridge strikes

As the Permanent Way Manager, you will be responsible for:

  • Planning and organising work
  • Safety and compliance
  • Leading and developing teams
  • Liaison with external stakeholders
  • Developing and managing assets and budgets
  • Budgets and Resources

Experience, skills and qualifications:

  • Extensive experience in the maintenance and management of railway track infrastructure.
  • In-depth knowledge of safety regulations and a commitment to implementing and promoting safety measures
  • Demonstrable experience in managing and motivating diverse teams
  • Recognised project management qualification
  • PWay Inspector Grade
  • Proven ability to manage track-related projects effectively, from planning to execution.
  • Membership of Professional Bodies / Rail Engineering Institute
  • Strong leadership skills to manage and motivate a team of track maintenance professionals. Effective communication skills for coordinating with internal teams and external partners.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding and hands-on motivator and organiser to harness the passion and enthusiasm of our volunteers with the support of a strategic partnership with Network Rail and the support of the Watercress Line Board.

Salary range

  • £40,000 per year
